The conflict between the Catholic church and the State, that in 1926 turned into a violent armed conflict, generated a written debate where the factions at war extended the struggle to the arena of public opinion. This debate had a double effect. In one way, the public sphere, that got stronger since the 1910 Revolution, lived a temporal efervescence; on the other hand, the ebullition of public opinion, provoked a reaction of the posrevolutionary State, contrary to plurality. This article explores the possibility of applying the public sphere's concept to the Mexican reality. Moreover, it analyzes the contents of the public debate, where both the arguments of the Catholic sector and those of the revolutionary vanguard in office were expressed. This last period of plurality brought about a strong wave of censorship, that propitiated the weakening of the Mexican public sphere during the following decades of the 20th century.
